Think about this for a second. Why is smoking legal in our society today? The effects of smoking on a person are so horrible and extreme, that there really is no reason for it to be legal. Lung disease, cancers, heart disease, and emphysema are just some of the harmful effects of smoking.
What intrigues me, is why would anyone smoke if they know it destroys their body, and why has the government kept it legal for such a long time? Many people say that smoking should not be illegal because it helps them with their day.
Its reasons like these that make it a personal freedom verses public health issue. But if what only comes out of smoking is pleasure, shouldn’t the government put health over pleasure?

Hey Chris,
ReplyDeleteI Love this! Great argument, this is probably one of the most stressed arguments in society today. A lot of people smoke around uni, and we're trying to avoid there exhale, of smoke...
I agree with you, second hand smoking is just as dangerous if not more. People I know have been diagnosed with lung cancer, whats weird about that? They don't smoke!
They are constantly in the midst of smokers and inhale there exhaled smoke. Its disgusting, just seeing someone else's breath and inhaling it is just bad enough.
I am Against smoking.
Keep up the good work man, Looking good.
Allan
Hey Chris!
ReplyDeleteI think your topic is really valid and it reflects your opinion quite well, there are a few little grammatical errors here and their but nothing a little proof reading couldn't fix :)
I like your intro and thought it was clever how to started with a rhetorical question to engage the reader and put the ball in their court. It gets people thinking which is good and provides and effective way to communicate your stand point.
I am against smoking as well and I'm glad someone has chosen to attack this topic and make people aware of how harmful it is, not just for the smoker themselves but for others too :)
just attack those grammar errors and your blog will be fantastic.

Hey Chris,
ReplyDeleteI was interested to read your blog. I'm a smoker, and while obviously as a smoker there are a few things I disagree with, on the whole I think you've put together a good argument. You didn't win me over, but I think it'd be pretty convincing for an idle non-smoker.
As Allan said, the idea of breathing in someone else's breath is pretty horrible. But one thing most non-smokers don't get is that smokers aren't trying to breath on you. In fact, most of them will try to avert or delay their exhale if it could inconvenience someone (obviously, there are exceptions, some people are just dicks). For the most part, we know you guys don't like it, and we try to respect that within reason.
Smoking has already been banned in public buildings, bars, many public places, advertising etc etc. Eventually it will be banned from all public areas, however I don't think it will ever just be BANNED. The trouble is where does the government stop banning things because they are dangerous? The idea of putting health over pleasure gives far too much power to a government in a democratic nation, regardless of their intentions.
Anyway, very thought provoking! And for the record, I'm not disagreeing with anyone. Smoking is bad for you, lung-cancer is a horrible way to die, and I have a crippling addiction. There is some content on the webs about how lung cancer is commonly caused by nuclear material in the atmosphere, how the government is happy to keep tobacco companies in business as long as they'll shoulder the blame for it. It's all very crackpot, but seems well researched and was interesting due to it being the only thing I've ever read about smoking that wasn't negative. Anyway, it's here (http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2006/01/02/how_mass_media_may_shape.htm#ixzz1q20xMTPL), if your interested in an opposing viewpoint.
hey chris
ReplyDeletei have recently just quit smoking and it is a bad habit. they should start having smoking sections for smokers so non smokers are not becoming second hand smokers. in singapore they have basically made the country smoke free due to their minimal allocated smoking sections. i think new zealand should start doing the same. :)
Hello Christ
ReplyDeleteIve read your Blog its very interesting. And I would say that its very bad for you and causes some symptoms you will develop over time. And yes some people say its very hard to quit smoking even if they try to not smoke just for one day it puts them into a bad mood.
The government should try to supress the people in some areas not too smoke especially in places where most people are. But when will that be? i dunno
great Blog chris!
Hey chris,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely detest having to sit next to smokers. I have always thought smoking is harmful and really bad thing for people.
People tried to smoke themselves into composure but it only lasts for short moment. Everyone knows smoking is killing them, but it is so difficult to quit so, I think cutting down on cigarette is more easier than quitting smoking.
I heard from radio that the government plans to raise cigarette prices in order to reduce smokers. I know that goverenment can not ban the cigarette, but they can reduce tobacco consumtion indirectly and this is the evidence that smking is basically bad.
